How much weight can you lose by taking laxatives?

Question by dagnabbit: How much weight can you lose by taking laxatives? I'm doing a project on weight loss, both healthy and unhealthy ways. I'm on the laxative section, but I don't really know how people use them for weight loss exactly. How much weight can you lose by taking them and for how long would you need to take them? Thanks! no one believes you are doing a project. i can categorically tell you that yes you will lose wt, approx 1-2 kg BUT its all water and as soon as you are rehydrated you will gain it back... and you risk messing up your potassium levels and permanently ruining your bowel. needing a colostomy is so NOT a good look. Purging with laxatives - “the laxative myth” Many people believe that using laxatives after bingeing will help them to control their weight and counteract any physical effects of binge eating however this is completely untrue. In fact by the time laxatives effect the large intestine almost all foods and calories have already been absorbed. How do laxatives cause weight loss if they don't rid the body of calories? Any “weight-loss” caused by laxative abuse is due to the loss of water, minerals, electrolytes, indigestible fibre and wastes from the colon. Once the body becomes re-hydrated this “water weight” that has been lost will return once more. Side effects of laxative abuse in bulimia Laxative abuse can eventually result in a condition called "Laxative dependency" which occurs when the colon stops reacting to usual doses of laxatives so that larger and larger amounts of laxatives may be needed to produce bowel movements. Bulimics who abuse laxatives can damage their gastrointestinal tract and cause weakening and softening of their bones. Abuse of laxatives in bulimia can also lead to serious bowel tumors and kidney problems. Generally if you are a bulimic who takes laxatives you will become unwell as your immune system starts to shut down leaving you susceptible to infection. Due to severe dehydration caused by laxatives and diuretics, sometimes drinking fluid is not enough to hydrate cells and tissues fast enough, when this happens it can cause organ damage and even death. Abuse of laxatives causes the muscles in your bowel can become very weak from the lack of use, with the delicate nerve lining in your body’s colon also becoming damaged. Long term bulimics who abuse laxatives can have colon failure. Therefore the health risks associated with using laxatives and diuretics are very high especially when you realize that they don't help you to counteract the physical consequences of a binge! Laxative and diurectic abuse can lead to: Tremors Dehydration Weakness Nausea Water retention Colon infection Blurry vision Severe abdominal pain Chronic Diarrhea Gas Bloating Electrolyte Disturbances Chronic Constipation Bowel tumors Irregular heartbeat Kidney damage Electrolyte imbalance Organ damage Colon failure Death http://www.bulimiahelp.org/book/about-bulimia/dangers-laxative-abuse

Very little, our food is digested in the stomach and small intestine, the large intestine that laxatives effect is more concerned about fluid extraction, so laxatives will likely make you dehydrated,

Pills or liquid, herbal or otherwise, laxative abuse is a common form of "weight control" in people suffering with Eating Disorders. The use of laxatives as a way to lose or control weight is not only dangerous, but irrational. The actual purpose of taking a laxative is to stimulate the large bowel to empty, which occurs only after the food and it's calories for energy have been absorbed through the small intestines. Essentially, a person taking laxatives to control weight is only going to cause their body to lose fluid, which can potentionally be followed by periods of water retention and an appearance of bloating (causing the sufferer to want to lose more weight and ingest more laxatives). The reason people suffering from eating disorders seem to lose weight while taking laxatives is because in most cases they are increasingly watching calorie intake and restricting food consumption, inducing vomiting, and/or compulsively exercising. Continued laxative use can cause bloating, cramping, dehydration, electrolyte disturbances and imbalances, cardiac arrhythmias, irregular heart beat and heart attack, renal problems, and death. Phenolphthalein, a popular ingredient previously found in many brands of laxatives has now been recalled by the FDA (Food and Drug Administration, United States) due to studies indicating that it has been linked to cancer. Withdrawal symptoms can be expected in stopping the use of laxatives after a continued period of using them as a "weight loss" method. These include, abdominal cramping, mild to severe constipation, bloating, mood swings and general feelings of fatigue and "feeling sick." In less severe cases the symptoms will usually subside in about 2 weeks, but in cases where a person have ingested handfuls or more laxatives on a regular basis, it may take longer and require medical assistance.
